Idaho lawmakers are cracking down on people who plant fake bombs.

Under a measure the House State Affairs Committee approved Tuesday, placing a hoax bomb would become a felony punishable by five years in prison.

Idaho law doesn't currently address fake explosives. That means prosecutors can only go after people who set up such devices with a disorderly conduct charge.

The bill's sponsor, Meridian Republican Rep. Marv Hagedorn, says hoax bombs waste law enforcement's time and scare customers from businesses.

Hagedorn says police officers contacted him after an incident at the Boise Towne Square mall last February. A man stationed several fake bombs around the mall, forcing about 2,000 people to evacuate and shutting down stores for several hours.

The measure will now be considered in the House.
